BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending October 13th, 2015.
FEMALE: Nadia Larocca (Mississauga, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Queen's Gaels – Hockey
To say that Queen’s Gaels forward Nadia Larocca (Mississauga, Ont.) almost single handedly beat the Brock Badgers and York Lions this past weekend wouldn’t be too far from the truth.
On Friday night, with the game tied 0-0 late in the third period, the third-year religious and political studies student-athlete scored two goals in the final 1:14 to help the Gaels escape with a 2-0 victory.
The Mississauga, Ont. native followed that up on Saturday by scoring the eventual game-winner on a highlight reel two-on-one to seal the victory 2-1 for Queen’s.
Larocca appears poised to have a breakout season as she currently leads OUA in goals (3) and game winning goals (2).
The Gaels return to action on Friday when they head out on the road to Toronto, Ont. to take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Varsity Arena.
MALE: Joey Cicchillo (North York, Ont.) – 4th yr – York Lions – Soccer
York striker Joey Cicchillo (North York, Ont.) found the back of the net three times in two games, including the winner on Saturday, to help the Lions to a pair of crucial victories over the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors.
On Thursday night, the fourth-year kinesiology and health science student-athlete scored the Lions second goal of the game in the 18th minute. After his teammate Dena Iezady extended the York lead to 3-0, Cicchillo added his team's fourth goal in the 61st minute, as the Lions would cruise to a 5-0 victory over Laurier.
Two days later, the 5’6” 140 lbs striker was the hero for York as his goal in the 66th minute would stand as the eventual game winner, as the Lions completed the comeback for a 2-1 victory.
The Lions currently find themselves in third place in the OUA West division but have a game in hand over the Windsor Lancers and McMaster Marauders.
York returns to the pitch on Friday for the back half of a home-and-home with the Waterloo Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 pm at Warrior Field in Waterloo, Ont.
